Silo Breaks Into Nielsen Top 10 for First Time

Apple TV+ is making waves in the streaming landscape as its sci-fi series Silo has landed on the Nielsen Top 10 streaming chart for the first time. The dystopian thriller ranked 9th with 417 million minutes viewed in the U.S. from December 30 to January 5. This achievement highlights the increasing reach of Apple’s original programming and sets a new milestone for the platform.

A Rare Apple TV+ Appearance on Nielsen’s Chart

Unlike Netflix and Prime Video, Apple TV+ titles have rarely secured spots on Nielsen’s rankings, which primarily track viewership minutes in the U.S. Silo now joins a select group of Apple series—including Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, and Hijack—that have managed to break into the rankings. While Apple has historically questioned Nielsen’s methodology, its presence on the chart indicates a growing audience engagement.

Streaming Heavyweights Dominate the Chart

Despite Silo’s breakthrough, the chart was once again dominated by Netflix’s Squid Game, which topped the list with 4.6 billion minutes viewed following the release of its second season. Other high-ranking titles included Netflix’s Virgin River and Paramount+’s Landman, with Silo sharing its ninth-place ranking with Netflix’s No Good Deed.

The Free Weekend Boost

A key factor behind Silo’s jump in viewership may have been Apple’s free weekend promotion on January 4-5, allowing all users to stream Apple TV+ content without a subscription. This strategy likely contributed to increased engagement with the series, exposing new audiences to its gripping storyline.

What’s Next for ‘Silo’?

At the time of its chart debut, Silo was deep into its second season, with 8 of 10 episodes released. Whether it climbs further up the rankings remains to be seen when Nielsen releases data covering the season finale.

Apple has confirmed that Silo is one of its most-watched drama series, and the show is already renewed for seasons three and four, which will conclude the adaptation of Hugh Howey’s book series. With growing recognition and continued investment from Apple, Silo could be a sign of bigger things to come for the platform’s original content.

I’ve been obsessed with sci-fi for as long as I can remember, always getting lost in stories about the future and what humans might become. Writing lets me explore those worlds while focusing on the people living in them. Joining SciFi Spiral introduced me to a community of fellow fans, and I’ve made some amazing friends who love sci-fi just as much as I do. When I’m not writing, you’ll probably find me reading my favorite sci-fi books.
