Foundation Season 3: Tim Southam Takes Over As Director Amid Production Shifts

Apple TV+’s Foundation series, a sci-fi epic based on Isaac Asimov’s groundbreaking novels, has undergone some significant changes ahead of its upcoming third season. Tim Southam, a veteran director known for his work on high-profile genre series, will take over from David S. Goyer as the lead director for the remaining episodes of Season 3. Here's a closer look at what these changes mean for the production and the show's future.

A New Director for Season 3

Tim Southam, a seasoned director with experience on shows like One Piece (Netflix), Lost In Space, and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, is stepping into the director’s chair for episodes 301-303 of Foundation Season 3. These episodes were initially started by David S. Goyer, the writer and executive producer behind the series. Goyer, who will continue to write and produce from Los Angeles, handed over the directing duties to Southam as part of several production adjustments aimed at managing the show’s budget.

This shift is part of a broader effort to scale back the production costs without sacrificing the series' quality. Goyer had already filmed about 80% of Episode 301, with the other two episodes about halfway complete before filming was paused due to ongoing production challenges.

Production Delays and Changes

Season 3’s production has faced several delays, largely due to issues related to budgeting and scheduling conflicts. Originally set to resume in February, filming is now slated to restart on March 6, 2025. The crew will reconvene in Prague, with additional filming set to take place across several Polish cities, including Warsaw, Kraków, Lublin, and Katowice.

The production pause also led to some reshuffling behind the scenes. Laurie Borg, the line producer and co-executive producer for the second season, has exited the project, and Doug Moreno, previously a production controller, will now assume her role. These changes reflect the ongoing restructuring to ensure the show continues smoothly despite financial challenges.

Key Changes in Leadership

In another move, Bill Bost, an executive producer of Foundation, will relocate to Prague for the duration of the season’s filming. Bost, who played a pivotal role in the development of the series during his time as President of Skydance Television, will oversee the production in its final stages. His move signifies the importance of stabilizing the production and ensuring that everything stays on track as the show moves forward.

A Glimpse Into the World of Foundation

Based on Isaac Asimov’s celebrated Foundation trilogy, the series chronicles a group of exiles who aim to prevent the collapse of the Galactic Empire. The complex tale follows four central figures as they navigate political intrigue, shifting alliances, and personal struggles across vast distances and timescales. As the story progresses, these characters’ decisions will shape the fate of humanity itself.

The cast, led by Jared Harris and Lee Pace, also includes Lou Llobell, Leah Harvey, Laura Birn, and a host of other talented actors. With these key behind-the-scenes changes, fans can expect a season that maintains the high stakes and rich storytelling that have become synonymous with the series.

Southam’s Legacy in Genre Television

Southam’s diverse experience in directing for genre television makes him an excellent fit for Foundation. His previous work includes episodes of One Piece, Locke & Key, and American Gods. With his track record, Southam is poised to bring a unique vision to the remainder of Season 3, furthering the narrative of Foundation while maintaining the high production standards fans have come to expect.

The transition to a new director, coupled with significant behind-the-scenes changes, marks an exciting new chapter for Foundation Season 3. As the series continues to push the boundaries of science fiction storytelling, these shifts in production will likely bring fresh energy and perspectives to the screen. With filming set to resume soon, fans can look forward to new developments in the saga of the Foundation.
