Foundation Season 4 September 2026 Updates: Laura Birn's Return & What's Next
Laura Birn appears to be returning for Foundation Season 4, giving fans another major reason to look forward to the next chapter of Apple TV’s sci-fi epic.
Birn, who plays Demerzel, was spotted in Prague and also attended the filming wrap party alongside fellow cast members. updates shared on social media from the gathering showed Birn celebrating the conclusion of filming in a group photo with co-stars Lee Pace, Terrence Mann, and Cassian Bilton. I don't think all this is just a visit, her presence strongly suggests that Demerzel will have a role in Season 4. although Apple has not revealed whether Birn is returning as a main cast member, appearing in flashbacks, or through the story's connection to the Prime Radiant and Kalle.
Her return could be especially important after the explosive Season 3 finale. Demerzel's actions have fundamentally changed the balance of power across the galaxy, while the season also revealed major new information about the Mule and the hidden history of humanity and the robots. I’m particularly interested in what the writers do with Demerzel next. She has gradually become one of the most important characters in Foundation, and Season 4 could finally connect her personal history to the larger mystery surrounding Earth, the robots and the future of the Empire.
Foundation Season 4 Has Finished Filming

Season 4 began production in early 2026 and filmed extensively in Prague and other locations across the Czech Republic. The production has now officially wrapped, with the series moving into a lengthy post-production period. Editing, visual effects, sound and scoring will still take several months before the episodes are ready for release.
Season 4 Is Expected in 2027
Apple TV has not announced an exact premiere date for Season 4. However, the current production timeline strongly points toward a 2027 release. The extensive visual-effects work required for Foundation means Apple is likely to give the season plenty of time in post-production before announcing a firm date. For now, 2027 is the safest release window to expect.
Lee Pace Is Also Returning

Lee Pace is officially returning despite the apparent fate of Brother Day. He was spotted filming Season 4 in Prague and teased that the new season will introduce a “whole new dimension” to the story. Exactly how Brother Day returns remains unknown. The show's history with clones, memories and advanced technology gives the writers several possible explanations, and Pace's return could have major consequences for the Empire storyline, and I’m glad Pace is back. His Cleon performances have consistently been among the strongest parts of the series, so Season 4 would feel different without him.

New Showrunners Are Leading Season 4
Ian Goldberg and David Kob are now serving as co-showrunners and executive producers after David S. Goyer stepped away from his primary showrunner position during Season 3 production. Let's just hope they don't turn Foundation into a sloppy show!
Hari Seldon and Gaal Dornick Are Returning

Of course, Jared Harris is expected to return as Hari Seldon, and Lou Llobell will continue as Gaal Dornick. Both characters remain central to the Foundation's struggle against the growing threats surrounding the galaxy. The season is also expected to continue exploring the collapse of the Galactic Empire as the Foundation's influence grows.
Cast members who joined in Season 3 and will return for Season 4 include Cherry Jones, Brandon P. Bell, Synnøve Karlsen, Cody Fern, Tómas Lemarquis, Alexander Siddig, and Troy Kotsur. The show now has several generations of characters and multiple storylines operating at once. That makes Season 4 more complicated, but it also gives the series plenty of material to work with.
The Mule Will Change Everything

Season 3 ended with a major revelation about the Mule, setting up one of the most important conflicts for Season 4. The Mule represents a direct threat to Seldon's predictions because her/his extraordinary abilities can disrupt the predictable behavior that psychohistory depends on. Season 4 should therefore explore the consequences of the Mule's emergence while dealing with the damage already done to the Empire.
Season 4 Could Explore Earth's Ancient History

The next season is also expected to go deeper into the origins of Earth and the secret history of the surviving robots; That's easily one of the storylines I'm most excited about. Those mysteries have been building for several seasons, and Demerzel sits at the center of many of them. If Season 4 finally connects these threads, it could expand Foundation beyond its familiar 'Foundation vs Empire' conflict and reveal why the distant past still matters to the future of humanity.
Could Season 4 Complete the Original Foundation Trilogy?
Season 4 is expected to bring the television adaptation closer to the conclusion of Isaac Asimov's original Foundation trilogy. The series has made significant changes to the books, so this shouldn't be treated as a direct adaptation of the novels. Still, the original trilogy provides a broad roadmap for where the story could eventually go. If Apple continues the series beyond Season 4, later seasons could potentially explore material from Foundation's Edge and Foundation and Earth. That future hasn't been confirmed, however.
For now, the focus is firmly on Season 4, and Laura Birn's apparent return could be one of its most important pieces. With filming complete and post-production underway, the next major announcement we are waiting for is Apple's official 2027 release date.
