A Big Move to Spain

Season 3 brings a massive change. The cast and crew have moved from France to Spain, and it shows. Norman Reedus describes the vibe as “Tatooine mixed with Don Quixote”, inspired by the ruins of Belchite. David Zabel, the showrunner, says Spain feels completely different from France—architecture, geography, language, and culture all add new layers to the story. Scott M. Gimple emphasized that this isnt just “an American show in Spain”! The series aims to reflect Spanish values and culture, offering storytelling far from the familiar backwoods of Georgia!

New Storylines and Characters

Season 3 starts with Daryl and Carol shipwrecked in Spain after a violent storm during a boat trip from England. They soon encounter a town with a strange system: trading young women for protection!! Carol’s attention shifts to a young couple, Roberto and Justina, played by Hugo Arbués and Candela Saitta. Adding to the drama, Eduardo Noriega joins as Antonio, a possible love interest for Carol. Daryl and Carol continue their journey, facing ever-changing and unfamiliar conditions, all while trying to reach home.

Stunning Locations and Cinematic Highlights

The gorgeous countryside dominates many scenes. Episode 5 stands out with a spaghetti western side mission in the ruins of Belchite, destroyed during the Spanish Civil War in 1937. Cast and crew describe it as cinematic, and hauntingly beautiful. Other locations include Barcelona, Seville, and Granada, offering cultural and visual diversity. Executive Producer Steve Squillante notes that Spain’s variety rivals California and New England.

Production Challenges

Filming in Spain wasn’t without obstacles. Despite the “Don Quixote dry western vibe”, unexpected heavy rain caused major problems. Reedus joked it hadn’t rained “in like a billion years” before it flooded. McBride called the logistics a “nightmare”. Still, over 95% of the season was filmed in Spain, with a team that was over 90% Spanish, showing the production’s commitment to local culture. A standout moment is the epic train sequence in Aragón, featuring lepers, eye-gauging vultures, and zombies pulling a train. It promises to be visually jaw-dropping.

Cast and Crew Insights

Norman Reedus (Daryl) and Melissa McBride (Carol) return as executive producers alongside Zabel. Reedus admits his Spanish skills are roughly equal to his French—good enough for greetings and “all the dirty words”. Zabel struggled with Spanish after mastering French, while McBride fell in love with the filming locations, saying, “Everywhere I go, I think, ‘I want to live here!’”

New series regulars include Eduardo Noriega, Óscar Jaenada, Alexandra Masangkay, with recurring roles from Candela Saitta and Hugo Arbués. Stephen Merchant also joins the cast. Both Reedus and McBride expressed gratitude to fans, with McBride adding, “There is still so much story left to tell”.

We’ll cover each episode in full detail in our coverage section, so fans won’t miss a single twist or development in Daryl and Carol’s adventure.
