Dark Matter Season 2 Episode 5 "Love and Be Loved" Recap: The Story of JasonX

This week's episode steps away from the main storyline and follows one alternate Jason as he finally stops searching for the perfect version of his life. Following the events of the Season 1 finale, the story shifts away from Jason1 and his family and follows one particular Jason who has been completely broken by the multiverse.

JasonX has reached a point where he no longer sees a reason to continue. His story becomes a surprisingly quiet exploration of grief, loneliness, family, and the difference between finding the person you imagined and building a life with the person who is actually there.

JasonX Decides to Give Himself Another Chance

After letting Jason1, Daniela and Charlie go, JasonX reaches the top of a skyscraper with suicide on his mind, having apparently run out of reasons to keep moving through an endless series of realities.

Before making his final decision, however, he discovers an ampoule of the multiversal transit drug (or what Ryan calls Lilac Wings) in his pocket. This gives him another possible path, and instead of ending his life, he writes down what he wants before entering the multiverse again, he wants to love and be loved.

That sentence becomes the emotional foundation for everything that follows, because JasonX is no longer entering the Box simply to find the perfect Daniela or recover the exact life he lost. For the first time, he is looking for somewhere he can actually belong.

JasonX Finds His Mother

JasonX eventually enters a universe where his mother, Ellie Dessen, is still alive. She is deaf and mute in this reality, and her own son died when he was 16, leaving JasonX with an opportunity to step into the life of someone who has already spent years grieving him.

He pretends to be her lost son who has somehow returned, and although the situation is built on a lie, JasonX finally finds something he has been missing throughout his journey, which is a place where someone genuinely wants him there. His new life is not immediately peaceful, though, because JasonX struggles with alcoholism and carries years of emotional damage with him. Ellie Dessen eventually confronts him about the person he has become and that she can't handle to loss her son twice. JasonX begins rebuilding his life through ordinary things, repairing his mother's home and eventually learning carpentry before making and selling handmade chairs.

JasonX Builds a New Family

JasonX's life takes another unexpected turn when he discovers another alternate Jason, let's call him JasonY, struggling and traumatized on the streets of Chicago. The episode never explains where JasonY came from or how he ended up in the same universe as JasonX, and this is one of the things that continues to bother me about this show. With so many possible worlds and an almost unlimited number of places where these characters could end up, they repeatedly seem to appear surprisingly close to one another, often without any clear reason for the coincidence.

So, JasonX finds JasonY and instead of seeing him as another competitor, JasonX brings him home. He later does the same with another lost version of himself, JasonZ, and the three Jasons gradually form an unusual but supportive family around Ellie Dessen. This is one of the most interesting ideas in the episode because these multiverse-traveling Jasons have spent Season 1 treating each other as threats, yet JasonX discovers that another version of himself can also be someone worth saving. The multiverse has given these men endless opportunities to become different people, but their experiences have also left them with many of the same wounds.

Ellie Dessen Gives JasonX One Final Lesson

JasonX's life with his mother becomes peaceful until Ellie Dessen is diagnosed with lung cancer. JasonX immediately prepares to devote everything he has to saving her, but Ellie Dessen understands that her son has become so focused on taking care of others that he could eventually end up alone, so she tells JasonX to find love. Her concern is that he needs someone who will still be beside him when he grows old. She pushes him toward something much less perfect but far more realistic.

JasonX Meets Maria

JasonX meets Maria, a bookstore owner, and the two gradually fall in love. I think this relationship represents something completely different from his search for Daniela because Maria has no connection to the life he originally lost. She is not the woman he remembers from another universe, and she is not someone he has spent years trying to find.

The relationship briefly falls apart when JasonX finally tells her the truth about his origins and shows her the Box. Understandably, Maria is frightened by what she sees and by the impossible story JasonX is asking her to accept. She ends the relationship, leaving JasonX to deal with another painful loss. At this point, it would have been easy for the episode to turn Maria into another person JasonX loses because of the multiverse, but the story takes a different direction.

Maria Comes Back After Ellie Dessen Dies

After Ellie Dessen dies, Maria reaches out to JasonX again. The two eventually reconnect, and JasonX moves into Maria's home, giving him another chance at the relationship he thought he had lost. There is still one final reminder of the life JasonX spent chasing, however, when he encounters this universe's Daniela while shopping for wine and flowers. This Daniela has never known Jason because her version of him died when he was 16. She has no idea who he is, and JasonX has no place in her life. Their meeting is brief and surprisingly ordinary.

Daniela helps him choose flowers for Maria, and JasonX walks away without trying to change anything. After everything he has gone through, that small interaction says more about his growth than another dramatic confrontation ever could.

Maria Discovers JasonX's Notebook

When JasonX is on his way home, Maria looks through his notebook and discovers the words he wrote before entering her reality. He had written that he wanted to "love and be loved". Maria finally understands what JasonX has been carrying with him all this time, including the desperation behind his journey and the reason he has struggled so hard to find somewhere he belongs. When JasonX returns, she embraces him. This is where the episode's title really lands. JasonX spent so much time believing that love meant finding the correct version of Daniela, but what he actually needed was someone who could know the real him and still choose to stay.

JasonX Finally Lets Go of Daniela

The episode ends with JasonX making the clearest decision of his entire journey. He cuts off the hairband he has worn around his finger as a symbol of his search for Daniela and lets go of the idea that somewhere in the multiverse there is a perfect version of his life waiting for him and he chooses Maria.

That does not mean Daniela was meaningless to him, or that the life he once had was not worth mourning. JasonX simply realizes that perfection is not the same thing as happiness, and endlessly searching for the perfect reality has prevented him from appreciating the life he can actually build.

You could easily call this a filler episode, much like Dead City Season 3's alternate-reality episode, but I found “Love and Be Loved” surprisingly refreshing because it gives us a better understanding of why some of these Jasons eventually stopped chasing Jason1 and his family. After spending so much time watching different Jasons fight over the same life, the episode shows that some of them are simply exhausted from chasing a reality that may never give them what they want. JasonX's story takes that idea even further, as he finally stops fighting for the life he lost and starts accepting the one he has.
