Apple TV is reportedly likely to renew Dark Matter for a third and final season, according to sources who spoke directly with SciFi Spiral reporter Ava Harper. Apple has not officially announced a renewal.

The possibility of a third season makes sense from a creative standpoint. Producer Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry has discussed the show's three-season plan, while Season 2 continues the story beyond Blake Crouch's original novel.

Season 2 has also received positive reviews, with an 81% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing. This performance closely tracks the strong critical reception and steady viewership numbers of the first season, proving the show has maintained its core audience. Historically, Apple waited just over a month (exactly 50 days) after the Season 1 finale to officially announce a renewal. Season 2's reception and reported viewership could support the case for another season.

The Three-Season Blueprint Behind Dark Matter

A potential third season would give Dark Matter an opportunity to bring its multiverse story to a planned conclusion. Blake Crouch's involvement in the adaptation gives the series a connection to the original novel, although the extent of any plans for a three-season story should be distinguished from an officially confirmed production plan.

Personally, I'd rather see the creative team finish the story with a clear ending than watch the series continue indefinitely without a strong narrative direction.

If Apple renews the show, the next season would need to address the consequences of the Season 2 finale and bring the larger story arc to a satisfying conclusion. For now, however, the reported renewal remains unconfirmed, but highly likely in my opinion.

About The Author

I write about science fiction through new releases and the ideas quietly shaping where the genre is headed. What pulls me in isn’t the technology itself, but what it reveals about people and the choices they make under pressure. I also have a soft spot for old sci-fi movies, especially how they built entire worlds with practical effects and early VFX long before modern tools existed. Most days I’m reading, scribbling notes, or chasing down a thought that won’t stay still until I write it out.
