For those who missed yesterday's Dead City live stream event, I'm not going to recap the first two seasons (shout out to Ava), but instead I will break down all the major news, updates, and creative shifts before the series returns this Sunday, July 26, 2026.

Dead City Season 3 Premieres July 26 on AMC

The new season consists of eight episodes (same as season 2). New episodes will air weekly (every Sunday) on AMC and stream simultaneously on AMC+. Early critic reviews for season 3 were good, with the 65th Monte-Carlo Television Festival crowd applauding the exclusive screening of the first two episodes for their intense, movie-level production values after a directionless, muddled second season.

A New Showrunner with Classic Energy

The biggest update or change behind the scenes this year is new showrunner Seth Hoffman. As an original Walking Dead alum who wrote for seasons 4 through 6, Hoffman immediately cleans up last season's messy plotlines right in the premiere. Reviewers note this new creative shift gives Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan a lot more room to really play with their characters.

Maggie and Negan Finally Form a Real Alliance

Post image

Finally, In season 3, Maggie and Negan will move past their decades-long grudge to build a thriving community in the ruins of New York. Instead of the usual constant bickering, trailer footage shows Maggie actively recruiting Negan for a fresh mission to save Manhattan. The cast promises a much lighter, evolved vibe this year, giving audiences a completely new side to their relationship.

Fresh Faces and an Alternate Reality Episode

A few new faces are joining Dead City this season. Aimee Garcia signs on as a highly optimistic community leader named Renata, while Jimmi Simpson is locked in to play Dillard. But the biggest surprise for fans is an 'alternate-reality' episode, which features the return of Emily Kinney as the long-dead fan favorite, Beth Greene.

Why The "Alternate-Reality" Episode

Post image

It feels like the new showrunner Seth Hoffman wanted to shake up the usual formula, and Lauren Cohan seemed completely on board with the chaos. By stripping away the zombies and dropping everyone into a normal, walker-free New York City, they get to run a fascinating "what if" experiment. It gives Maggie and Negan a bizarre chance to look at each other without decades of trauma blocking the view. Plus, it is just a brilliant, organic excuse to bring back long-dead favorites like Beth Greene without resorting to a cheap dream sequence or a standard flashback. It's weird and risky but I'm open for new things and experiments!

Now, let me end with the episode titles and their release dates:

Episode 1: "Trillium" (Premieres July 26)

Episode 2: "Haven" (August 2)

Episode 3: "Emigrants" (August 9)

Episode 4: "Found/Lost" (August 16)

Episode 5: "Imperialis" (August 23)

Episode 6: "Genesis" (August 30) --> This is the alternate-reality episode featuring Beth Greene!

Episode 7: "Hourglass" (September 6)

Episode 8: "Tenebrae" (September 13)

I write about science fiction through new releases and the ideas quietly shaping where the genre is headed. What pulls me in isn’t the technology itself, but what it reveals about people and the choices they make under pressure. I also have a soft spot for old sci-fi movies, especially how they built entire worlds with practical effects and early VFX long before modern tools existed. Most days I’m reading, scribbling notes, or chasing down a thought that won’t stay still until I write it out.
