Gimple Confirms New Walking Dead Universe Future Plans
The Walking Dead universe is preparing for a long future, as AMC shifts how it manages the franchise. Instead of releasing several spin-offs at once, Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple says the goal is to give individual stories more room to breathe.
Gimple compared the strategy to Marvel and Star Wars, where stories build up over years through connected characters and projects. It is a logical pivot. The franchise has a massive world, but flooding the market risks burning out the audience. Slowing down could help each new release feel more like an event.
A 15-Year Plan

Gimple believes the franchise is only about halfway through its lifespan, suggesting it could run for another 15 years if they find the right stories. This does not mean the current cast will stay forever. Instead, the universe will likely rely on new settings, survivors, and threats.
The real test for AMC is keeping the narrative fresh. The zombie apocalypse has been covered from nearly every angle. Future projects will need to offer more than just a new group of survivors fighting walkers. The franchise's best path forward is making every show feel distinct while keeping them tied to the same world.
The Possibility of a Major Crossover

Gimple and actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan have also floated the idea of a massive crossover event. The concept would bring the franchise's heavy hitters—including Rick Grimes, Michonne, Daryl Dixon, Carol Peletier, Negan, and Maggie—back into the same storyline. Gimple confirmed the idea is being discussed, though AMC has not officially greenlit the project. Logistical hurdles remain, such as coordinating busy actor schedules and preventing script leaks. While difficult to pull off, a reunion would give longtime fans a payoff they have wanted for years, especially since these characters have been separated for so long.

Exploring Stories and Global Settings

Behind the scenes, smaller concepts are also on the table. One potential spin-off focuses on Aaron and Gabriel, two characters who grew into an unexpected partnership over the years. Because both characters evolved significantly during the main series, a smaller, character-driven show could offer a nice change of pace from world-ending stakes. There are also plans to take the outbreak global. Gimple has expressed interest in filming in locations like Tokyo, Africa, and Iceland to show how different countries handled the collapse.
More Fear the Walking Dead Spin-Offs May Also Be Coming
Additionally, industry reports suggest early talks are happening for spin-offs involving Fear the Walking Dead characters, though AMC has not confirmed them. For now, AMC’s strategy is clear: they are playing the long game by slowing production, eyeing a massive reunion, and expanding the franchise globally.
