Silo 350-Year History: The Hidden Show Timeline [Explained]

Silo season 3 is arriving in less than 24 hours. This season will present two timelines: the origins of the silos and the aftermath of Silo 18's rebellion. As you can see, it will focus on the past and the present, but not the history in between. So, I thought, why not write about this era in between while we wait for this dystopian sci-fi masterpiece?
I will give a brief glimpse into the key eras of the 350-year silo history—after the origins and before the present. This will be completely spoiler-free and heavily based on the show (not the books). So, shall we?
The Green World That Ended in Secret

Before people were trapped under 144 levels of concrete, the world was actually green. We know this because of an old virtual reality relic used in the show, which proves a healthy ecosystem used to exist. But things shifted fast. The 2020s quickly turned into a decade of high-stakes secrets and frantic bunker construction.
Some pretty crazy things happened back then. For instance, a simple meeting between a politician and a journalist in a bar actually started the whole rebel culture we see in the present time. A tiny, everyday item was passed down through generations of "Flamekeepers" to keep the truth alive. It’s wild to think that a piece of plastic completely connects our century to future rebels like George Wilkins.

History inside Silo 18 was actively erased. About 140 years before the present time in Silo 18, things were an absolute mess. Uprisings were breaking out with every single generation, totally threatening the status quo. The rulers realized that if people remembered the past, they would never stop fighting the system.
So, a past mayor, Salvador Quinn, did something unthinkable. He used a terrifyingly effective "Memory Wipe" chemical to break the cycle of history. He literally used the water supply to drug the entire population into forgetting their heritage. At the same time, every single book and physical record was completely destroyed. This is exactly why the current residents know absolutely nothing about where they come from.

A Neighbor Choked in Silence

Silo 18's closest neighbor suffered a much worse fate. Roughly 30 years before the present time in Silo 18, Silo 17 experienced a total, chaotic collapse. This wasn't just a minor riot. The rules failed completely, and society tore itself to pieces.
It was absolute hell inside. The citizens actually rushed the airlocks, deciding they would rather face the toxic outside than stay another minute underground. Because of that mass exodus, a whole civilization just vanished into thin air. It left behind a massive, dark machine and a lone survivor named Jimmy (Solo)—a ghost who has been living in total isolation ever since.
These three dark milestones are the big historical anchors that define the show's entire 350-year timeline.
And that brings us right back to the edge of the seat we’ve been sitting on for months. Season 3 is officially here, and the cracks in the Silo's history are about to burst wide open. While the show prepares to jump between the deep past and the chaotic present, you don't have to stay completely in the dark about the centuries of secrets buried beneath the ground!
If you want to know the full, unbroken story of what went down during those hidden years (between the origins and the present time), my team put together the ultimate, spoiler-free, show-based timeline guide that maps out every major event in a clear, easy-to-follow order. It’s the perfect companion to read right before you press play on the new episodes.
Let’s see what truths get uncovered tonight. Enjoy the premiere!
