In the promotional campaign, Steven Spielberg stated that his belief has evolved,

"I am much more inclined now than I was when I made Close Encounters to really believe that we're not the only intelligent civilization."

Fans are heavily theorizing that Disclosure Day acts as a modern-day continuation of Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) or E.T. (1982). It shifts the narrative from tracking UFOs to dealing with the sudden reality of their presence.

Spielberg explicitly links the themes of the two films, stating that Disclosure Day will ultimately change humanity for the better by reminding us of our capacity for empathy.

Production and Release Details

Disclosure Day is one of those productions that somehow feels massive on screen but surprisingly controlled behind the scenes. The budget sits at around $115 million, which for a project of this scale is actually pretty disciplined, especially for a Spielberg sci-fi film.

Filming ran fairly quickly too, between February and May 2025, with locations spread across New York, New Jersey, and Atlanta. It gives it that grounded, real-world texture instead of building everything on soundstages.

One of the more unusual decisions is how much they’re holding back from the marketing. Even the final third of the movie has basically been kept out of trailers entirely, which is a bold move in today’s spoiler-heavy promo cycle. They’re clearly trying to preserve the experience as much as possible.
