Dead City Season 3 Episode 7 “Hourglass” Recap: Dillard's Shocking Transformation

Episode 7 of Dead City Season 3 completely changes the balance of power in the final stretch of the season. The episode finally reveals the truth behind Dillard’s attack, gives Renata a chance to redeem herself, and then destroys that progress almost immediately. By the end, Dillard has taken control of the community and put Maggie, Negan, and everyone else in an impossible situation. I honestly didn’t expect the episode to go this far. Dillard has been strange all season, but this episode turns him into a genuinely terrifying villain.

Dillard Lied About Negan Attacking Him

Dillard deliberately slashes his own face. He does it because Negan has just killed the two zombies inside the bar, whom Dillard has apparently kept as his friends (or pets) throughout the apocalypse. Dillard then returns to Renata and the community and claims that Negan did it, using his injuries to make the lie convincing. That completely changes how I see Dillard.

Earlier in the season, I bought into his eccentric personality and his stories about being a heroic undercover cop. Now, I think almost everything about that persona was an act, and carving up his own face just to frame Negan and convince Renata that he’s an uncontrollable threat is absolutely insane. It was disturbing because Dillard is willing to seriously hurt himself to make the lie convincing, all because Negan killed the two zombies he considered his friends.

Luis Returns Maggie’s Lost Ring

Amid all the violence and manipulation, the episode gives Maggie a surprisingly emotional moment. Luis finds Maggie’s lost wedding ring and returns it to her. I have mixed feelings about the ring itself, though. Maggie losing it previously felt symbolic. It seemed like she was finally letting go of the part of her life that had been defined by Glenn, Negan, and everything she had lost. Having the ring return to her feels like the story is taking that development backward. Still, Luis finding it was genuinely touching. It shows how much Maggie means to him, and I’m really starting to enjoy their relationship. Luis has become one of the people Maggie can actually trust, which is especially important now that almost everyone around her seems to have an agenda.

Renata Finally Realizes What Fear Has Done to Her

Maggie and Luis continue trying to convince Renata not to execute Negan. Their argument is that if Renata kills Negan purely because she is afraid of him, she risks destroying the civilized community she claims to be protecting. The laws and rules mean nothing if fear can make the leader abandon them whenever she wants. Renata struggles with that idea until she encounters a helpless walker near a waste bin. She brutally kills it, but something about the moment finally breaks through her anger. She realizes that fear and revenge have been controlling her decisions. Renata finally understands what she has become. I really liked this scene because Renata has frustrated me for most of the season. She has been overbearing and far too willing to let fear dictate her choices. But this moment gives her genuine self-awareness. For the first time, she chooses what she's building over revenge. Renata orders her people to stand down and appears ready to spare Negan... then Dillard shoots her!

Dillard Executes Renata

The timing makes Renata’s death even more brutal. She finally makes the right decision, accepts that Negan shouldn’t be executed, and orders her group to stop, but Dillard refuses. He pulls out his weapon and kills Renata at point-blank range. I was genuinely angry when this happened. I fully expected Renata to lose control and eventually force Maggie or Negan into killing her. Instead, the episode gives her a redemption arc and then takes her away at the exact moment she earns it.

Dillard is actively rejecting everything she was trying to build. He doesn’t believe in her rules, her authority, or the idea that their community can survive by holding onto civilization. He believes survival is all that matters.

Dillard Drops the Act and Takes Control

After Renata’s death, Dillard completely drops his facade. There’s no more pretending to be the eccentric police officer or some morally complicated survivor. Dillard reveals exactly what he wants. He tells the survivors to abandon the rules of civilization and focus on raw survival. His followers seize control of the community, taking the guns and food while making it clear that Dillard is now calling the shots. This is where Jimmi Simpson becomes the star of the episode for me. His performance as Dillard is fantastic. He manages to make the character funny, unpredictable, and genuinely disturbing at the same time. I do think his transformation into a full-blown psychopath happened a little too quickly, but I can't deny how entertaining it is to watch. And the strangest part is how ridiculous the foundation of this entire feud is.

Dillard's obsession with Negan ultimately comes down to Negan accidentally killing his zombie pet, Cockenspiel, before deliberately killing Titicaca. Somehow, that was enough to send this man completely over the edge. It’s absurd, but somehow it fits Dillard perfectly.

Maggie and Negan Face an Impossible Choice

The episode ends with Dillard and his armed followers sealing the survivors inside a building, then he gives Maggie an ultimatum. Sacrifice Negan, or Dillard will kill Luis and let the walkers loose and allow them to slaughter everyone. That leaves Maggie facing one of the hardest choices of the season. She has spent years wrestling with her hatred of Negan, but now his life is directly connected to the survival of everyone around her. Dillard has created exactly the kind of situation where there is no clean answer, and that’s a fantastic cliffhanger heading into the finale.

“Hourglass” Sets Up a Dangerous Finale

This week's episode is easily one of the most important episodes of Dead City Season 3 because it completely changes the power structure. Renata is dead (I believe), Dillard has taken control, Negan is once again at the center of a deadly conflict, and Maggie has to decide how far she is willing to go to save him and the people trapped with them. My biggest concern is that Dillard might be killed too soon, same as Bruegel from Season 2.

I’m absolutely obsessed with what Jimmi Simpson is doing with this character, and I really want to see Dillard survive long enough to become a genuine multi-season villain. Unfortunately, I have a bad feeling the finale could end with him getting “Lucilled” or otherwise killed before we get to enjoy him for very long. Either way, Dead City has created a seriously entertaining villain at exactly the right time. And after everything that happened in this episode, I have no idea how Maggie and Negan are getting out of this one.
