Godzilla x Kong: Supernova – Release Date, Cast & Plot

The Monsterverse is officially returning on 26 March 2027 with a new movie titled Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. It will be the 6th installment in the Monsterverse, and it also acts as the third film in the specific crossover trilogy focusing on Godzilla and Kong teaming up together. The movie also has a special place in Sam Neill's fans hearts (I'm one of them), because it is one of his last movies or projects that he completed before his passing in July 2026.

Creative Team & Cast

Early screenings show that the movie moves away from the neon-pop aesthetic of The New Empire for a tone that I like the most, darker, more serious, and apocalyptic with much stronger human character writing.

It is going to be directed by Grant Sputore with a script penned by David Callaham, who co-wrote the 2014 Godzilla, and Michael Lloyd Green.

The budget is massive, $200 million is locked for this project with international co-production. Filming wrapped across locations including Queensland (Australia), Utah, Thailand, and Mexico City.

Alongside one of Sam Neill's final performances, the movie features returning star Dan Stevens (who plays Trapper) alongside Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O'Connell, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Delroy Lindo, and Matthew Modine.

Plot Points & Sam Neill

In this movie, Monarch detects a mysterious, rhythmic distress signal pulsing from the Hollow Earth, throwing global ecosystems off balance and generating a planetary "monster storm".

Godzilla takes center stage in this movie as the primary protagonist this time around (similar to how Kong led The New Empire). His personality shifts back to his calmer, majestic protector roots from the 2014 film. Meanwhile, Kong utilizes an upgraded Monarch exoskeleton suit to hold his own against cosmic forces.

The villain in this story is going to be the Toho legacy villain SpaceGodzilla (according to the leaks). Early reports suggest he is a terrifying crystalline entity heralding an even larger, planet-eating cosmic threat that is teased at the very end of the movie. The cybernetic Gigan is also featured.

Sam Neill's Role

As for Sam Neill, it is not clear what his role is going to be, but the team behind the movie stated that it is going to be significant. This movie as I said earlier is going to be one of Sam's final film appearances sadly following his passing on July 2026. The principal photography was already completed prior to his passing.

I'm very excited for this movie and to see one of Sam Neill's last dances. The story, the creative team, and the cast makes you interested in this movie. All I can say is that I can't wait for March 26th next year.
